Full and partial dentures are a costly investment. Keeping them clean is an important part of not only protecting your investment but helping to keep you healthy.  Dentures will become contaminated with the bacteria in your mouth. They also can become contaminated when you get a cold or the flu. Therefore, regular thorough cleaning is imperative to maintain your personal health. Partial dentures have wires or clasps made of metal where food particles, bacteria and plaque will form. That is why it is best to remove the partial denture as soon as possible after all meals and snacks and to at least rinse them off thoroughly as well as to rinse out your mouth with water. If the plaque and food particles are allowed to accumulate and stay on the tooth structure, tooth decay will happen all along the clasps/wires. This will destroy the tooth/teeth that serve to anchor the partial denture.

Denture cleansers serve to disinfect the dentures as well as to help remove stain or prevent plaque and calculus (hard deposits) from forming on the surfaces of the dentures. When natural teeth are involved and a patient has a partial denture, meticulous oral care of these remaining “anchor” teeth is important. Regular daily care is necessary as is regular dental hygiene appointments and dental examinations to help maintain the health of the teeth and the supporting oral tissues.

Proper Way to Clean Full & Partial Dentures:

It is always best to clean dentures over a sink full of water with a towel or wash cloth in the bottom of the sink. The purpose of this is to help soften the fall of the denture into the sink should you drop the denture. This will usually prevent damage to the denture teeth, surfaces or clasps.

Use The Correct Cleansers:

Denture cleansers should be used daily to clean and disinfect the dentures. You should have a separate denture bath for the denture cleanser. The dentures need to be clean before placing them in the cleansers. This allows the cleanser to clean and disinfect the surfaces of the dentures. Never use regular toothpaste on your denture teeth or denture surfaces. The pumice in the toothpaste will scratch the surfaces of the denture. Do not use bleach or abrasive cleansers on your dentures. Bleach damages the acrylic denture base materials and discolors/oxidizes the metal framework in partial dentures. Be sure to use copious amounts of water to rinse dentures thoroughly after they have been in cleansers.

Denture Care:  

Dentures are processed in a water environment. Therefore, it is best to always keep your dentures moist and not allow them to dry out.  Spare dentures should be cleaned regularly and kept in clean water. They too should be cleaned in a denture cleanser regularly.
